PLAZA SOTOMAYOR
An important square featuring the Monument to the Heroes of Iquique, commemorating the 1879 naval battle in the Pacific War.
The Plaza Sotomayor is one of the most important squares in the city. You can see the Monument to the Heroes of Iquique, in commemoration of the naval battle of May 21, 1879 in the Pacific War. It is also an important archaeological site: the first wooden wharf of Valparaíso dating from 1825 was discovered there, as well as the remains of the Hotel Inglés, the first Stock Exchange and the first Spanish frigate Esmeralda, captured by Cochrane in 1820. However, the in situ museum that opened in 2001 is now closed to the public.
