PLAZA ECHAURREN
This first square of Valparaíso's colonial era, which has yet to be restored, boasts a number of attractive buildings.
This was the first square of the city, in colonial times. There are still some nice buildings, but the surroundings have hardly been restored. Let's go to Calle Serrano, in the heart of Barrio Puerto de Valparaíso. In the 19th century, it was one of the main arteries of the city, hence the beautiful houses that can still be seen today. Unfortunately, a gas explosion destroyed five of the most emblematic buildings. You can take the Cordillera lift (from 1887) or the 162 steps of the "stairway of death" as it is called here.
