FUERTE TUCAPEL
This fort, which was destroyed many times and then rebuilt several times, features an exhibition of period artefacts.
This fort, a National Monument of which only a few ruins remain today, was built by Pedro de Valdivia in 1553 and destroyed in December of that year during the Battle of Tucapel. It was Garcia Hurtado de Mendoza who decided to rebuild it four years later, in 1557, before officially founding the town of Cañete a year later. Destroyed several times by Mapuche attacks, it was rebuilt several times in the 17th century. An exhibition showcases period objects from both Mapuche and Spanish cultures.
