The square was declared a Typical Protected Area in 1991. Its centre is decorated with a bronze sculpture inaugurated in 1920 to commemorate the fourth centenary of the discovery of the Strait. It depicts the navigator on a pedestal with Fuegian natives at its base. Around the square are the residences of the pioneers of cattle breeding (Alejandro Menendez, Jose Montes) and the former headquarters of the Braun and Blanchard company (the Palacio Sara Braun, now the Club de la Unión).
