THE ROYAL PALACE
Royal palace north of Fès el Jedid, with magnificent monumental portal, gilded bronze doors and canopy
To the north of Fès el-Jedid lies the Royal Palace (Dar el-Makhzen). Built in the 14th century, it covers 80 hectares and overlooks the vast Place des Alaouites. The fortified complex comprises several palaces and mechouars, a medersa, a mosque and the immense Lalla Mina gardens. The palace, where the sovereign spends a few weeks each year, is not open to visitors. On the Place des Alaouites, you can only admire the magnificent monumental portal adorned with mosaics and stuccowork, its gilded bronze doors and its canopy covered with green tiles.
