TOM THOMSON ART GALLERY
Museum with a gallery featuring works on the many contemporary interpretations and diverse art forms.
A not-to-be-missed museum dedicated to local (Leith) painter Tom Thomson (1877-1917), whose accidental death in Algonquin National Park, which he loved to paint, gives him a touch of mystery and legend. Photos, objects, documents, as well as one of the most important collections of the works of this emblematic Canadian painter, great inspirer of the famous Group of Seven, are gathered here. The gallery also presents works by the Group of Seven and other artists from the region and elsewhere in the country. In all cases, the emphasis is on landscape works and the many contemporary interpretations of this tradition. The Tom Thomson Art Gallery's permanent collection contains works spanning a period of over 150 years and including various art forms: paintings, works on paper, photographs, sculptures, textiles, installations and even a Kawasaki motorcycle. Numerous temporary exhibitions are also held throughout the year, all of which are always very interesting. The gallery also wishes to create a place of gathering and discussion within its walls, and organizes conferences, forums, film screenings, concerts and workshops to which both professionals and the general public are invited. Before leaving the premises, take a tour of the atrium side where the gallery shop is located. In addition to books and other items related to the exhibitions, there are many craftsmen's products.
