HE CHURCH OF THE TRANSFIGURATION (ФАРНЫЙ ФАРНЫЙ ПРЕОБРАЖЕНИЯ ПРЕОБРАЖЕНИЯ)

This superb Catholic church stands at the foot of the castle hill. It was built in 1395 by the Prince Vytautas the Great in place of a pagan temple dedicated to Péroun, the Slavic god of war and thunder. It is a monument of rare beauty, of baroque baroque style, the particularity of which lies in the almost austere minimalism of religious buildings, reminiscent of fortresses. In 1422, the King of Poland Ladislas II Jagiellonian and Princess Sophie of Holszany celebrate their wedding here. Thus, the powerful Jagiellonian dynasty was born in Poland, Sweden, Hungary and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania for over 200 years. On 12 February 1799, the famous painter Adam Mickiewicz was baptized in this church.
