Free visit. The ancient town of Kawa stretched on the east bank of the Nile, 50 km south of Kerma. The Koushites kings and Egyptians embellirent him several times, especially under Tutankhamun who built a temple dedicated to Amun. Kawa was gradually abandoned, however, while the central power in Merowe was effritait in the Fifth century of our era. Gathered by the elements and partly forgotten, before being re-covered by the sands, Kawa was excavated several times during the th century and several of his treasures were shipped to Europe. If the site of the city is vast, there is little left to see on the surface. Kawa is located a few kilometres south of As-Selim, west of the main road along the Nile. There are signs, although not easily identifiable, beyond a sand field near the fence protecting the site. You can join As-Selim in boksi (1 SDG) from the station near the central mosque of Dongola, but you will have to rent a taxi to go to Kawa (30 to 40 SDG), or to walk along the river if you are brave, with lots of water and available time.
