MUSEO DE ARTE CONTEMPORÁNEO (MAR)
A 2-storey contemporary art museum with a café and a calendar of events that can be consulted on their social networks
Inaugurated in early 2014 facing the sea after 3 years of work, it is the largest space in the country dedicated to contemporary art; it covers 7,000 square meters. The museum building is a huge concrete block, quite imposing seen from the outside, with two floors. There is a beautiful view of the shoreline from the inside. For its first exhibition called "Ola Pop en el Mar", the management chose to highlight the pop art wave of the 1960s and some emblematic artists of the famous Instituto Di Tella, such as Edgardo Giménez, Delia Cancela or the eccentric Marta Minujín. Visitors are greeted by a monumental 9-meter statue of local media star Moria Casán, the work of Edgardo Giménez. Marta Minujín, on the other hand, has created an imposing sculpture of a sea lion, the symbol of the city, entirely covered with packages of Havanaalfajores (more than 80,000!), the sweet specialty of Mar del Plata.
Exhibitions of national and international artists in sculpture, photography, drawing, etc. are held here. The museum's proposal is wide and generally suits all tastes in contemporary art. Check the social networks for the agenda of the events that take place there: concerts, meetings, film screenings and other proposals. The museum also has a café where you can enjoy a nice view. The pies are delicious!
