BOURSCHEID CASTLE
The name of Lord Bertram von Bourscheid is first mentioned in 1095, but the castle is thought to have been built around the year 1000 on the basis of remains from earlier periods. Situated on a rocky outcrop 150 meters above sea level and surrounded by rivers, the castle overlooked the entire Sûre valley, and was surrounded by a wall with 11 towers. This made it impregnable.
It was extended many times, and its architecture reflects the styles of different eras. The surrounding wall dates from 1350-1384. The Stolzembourg house was built in 1384 and the bailey in 1477. The keeps on the south and east sides date back to 1498, and the artillery bastions were added in the 16th century. Only the gatekeeper's house and Stolzembourg's house were rebuilt according to the old model. A striking building set in lush greenery, well worth a visit. The aerial views of the château are also quite remarkable, so don't hesitate to consult them on the site.
Victor Hugo, in love with Château de Bourscheid. The famous 19th-century French writer visited the château on September 20, 1865 and quickly fell under its spell. In his travel diary, he noted his first impressions: "An old woman welcomes us. Her dwelling is in a tower [... ]. She lives there with her young daughter. We wander through the ruins. I draw her. It is admirable. It's a huge tear-out of walls and towers [... ], the view is splendid."
