ARCHITECTURAL WALK
A 5 km circuit to discover some thirty architectural treasures nestled in the heart of Esch-sur-Alzette.
A beautiful initiative that this didactic walk: it is true that one often passes by, through negligence or lack of indication, some small architectural jewels... To alleviate this problem, the tourist office of Esch-sur Alzette has created a 5 km walk linking its most beautiful pieces of architecture and thus revealing a part of the history of the city.
The great stylistic variety of the façades shows us that it belongs to the eclecticism movement at the end of the 19th century. With a variety of influences, all styles are represented: neo-gothic, neo-Romanesque, neo-classical, historicism and even the most modern styles of the early 20th century, such as Italian Liberty, Art Nouveau and Art Deco.
The route starts east of the town centre, at the Berwart Tower, next to the old gate of the Baroque castle. It then follows the streets of bourgeois houses, decorated with modillions supporting magnificent balconies, the Art Deco grills of the former residence of the architect Jean Deitz-Kintzelé, the Mayrisch square, the majestic St. Joseph's church and the Boltgen square. It then follows the rue de l'Alzette to the Brill school, before leading to the Sacré-Cœur church, then to the Place de la Résistance and its museum. It finally returns to the Hôtel de la Poste to reach the station and return to the starting point via rue Boltgen. In total, the walk includes 34 points of interest, described and explained in the brochure available at the tourist office.
