VIANDEN CASTLE
One of Luxembourg's most beautiful and impressive castles! If possible, discover it during the Vianden Medieval Festival.
Built between the 11th and 14th centuries, on the foundations of a Roman castle and a Carolingian refuge, the castle of Vianden is one of the most impressive castles of Luxembourg. It was elected as one of the most beautiful castles in the world by the American channel CNN. Overlooking the city and the valley of the Our, it is characterized by a circular enclosure. It was the residence of the Counts of Vianden until the 15th century and changed ownership several times until it was acquired by the Grand Duke Adolph of the Nassau dynasty in 1890. Owned by the grand-ducal family, it gradually fell into ruin. It was bought by the Luxembourg State in 1977, which undertook a major renovation project. The goal: to rebuild it faithfully to the neo-gothic spirit of the 19th century. The work was completed in 1982.
Today, visitors can enter the architectural complex and discover, among other things, the interior courtyard, the hall of the horsemen or the monumental gallery (also called Byzantine gallery). One of the most striking buildings is undoubtedly the castral chapel, a beautifully restored Romanesque-Gothic architectural gem. In the bailey there is an information center, a store and a tavern.
The castle regularly hosts events, the most important of which is the Medieval Festival of Vianden, which takes place every year for a week (usually between July and August). The program includes medieval music, demonstrations, shows and a craft market.
