Located in the natural park of the same name, the lake of the Haute-Sûre is a place of relaxation with water activities and walks.
With a surface area of 380 hectares and 27 km long, this lake supplies two thirds of the country with drinking water thanks to a total volume of 59 million m3. It was created in 1961 by the construction of a dam 47 metres high and 168 metres long, which is crossed at the eastern end of the lake. In addition, six secondary dams were built, four of them downstream of the main dam, to regulate the lake level and the level of the Sûre.
The economic and tourist importance of the lake for the region has enabled eight villages (Bavigne, Harlange, Kaundorf, Liefrange, Mecher, Nothum, Tarchamps and Watrange) to be grouped together in a single municipality, called the municipality of Lake Upper Sûre, with its administrative headquarters in Bavigne. Nevertheless, Esch-sur-Sûre, ideally situated on the main access road to the lake, is to be visited first.
The bottom of the main reservoir, upstream from the Misère Bridge, is home to wildlife that is threatened with extinction, such as otters, wild cats and hazel grouse.
Outside the protected area (from Esch-sur-Sûre to Lultzhausen) you can enjoy all kinds of water sports such as canoeing, windsurfing and sailing. Motorboats are not permitted. Several beaches are located around the lake, inviting visitors to go swimming, while numerous hiking and cycling tours are possible in the surrounding area. A guided tour of the lake is offered on board a solar-powered boat (about two hours).
