SANTUÁRIO DO CARAÇA
The sanctuary of Caraça is not to be missed. The buildings are full of history and the environment is of real beauty.
The Santuário do Caraça is a must-see in more ways than one. The buildings are steeped in history, but the surroundings (in the "natural" sense) are immaculately beautiful. In 1774, the Portuguese Franciscan friar Lourenço de Nossa Senhora founded a brotherhood and convent in Caraça. In 1819, on his death, he bequeathed his sanctuary to Dom João VI and asked him to build a college there, which was completed in 1820 and became famous throughout the country. A three-storey building housed classrooms, a theater and a library, next to the neo-Gothic church. From 1820 to 1911, important local politicians attended the school. Today, following a fire that devastated the complex in 1968, only the church and its wings remain intact. The college's activities have been discontinued, and the buildings have been converted into a place of rest and meditation, open to tourists. Here, you can admire the beauty of the site, dominated by the imposing Caraça mountain. Also worth a visit are the Nossa Senhora Mãe dos Homens church, the cloister, the catacombs, the restored ruins of the college, the library, the garden with its sundial, the calvary and the museum containing objects bearing witness to the history of the site, including the bed where Emperor Dom Pedro II once slept. One of the great adventures for those who choose to spend the night in these tranquil surroundings is to await the visit of the shy maned wolves that have become accustomed to visiting here.
