NOTRE DAME BASILICA
Alençon's basilica boasts one of Normandy's finest flamboyant Gothic portals and stained-glass windows
Built in the Gothic style, construction of the basilica began in 1354. The edifice boasts one of Normandy's finest flamboyant Gothic portals: a veritable stone lacework populated by statues illustrating the theme of the Transfiguration. A 20-metre-high nave built in the 14th century, an organ and chapels topped by magnificent 16th-century stained-glass windows - including the upper ones depicting episodes in the life of Mary - make it one of the most beautiful buildings in the department, with the exception of the bell tower rebuilt in the 18th century.
