Burlesque and satirical, it is a living expression of the indigenous people, representing cunning against submissive force.
This festival celebrates the resistance of the indigenous people against the slavery imposed by the Spanish. A mythical being, half bull, half deer, El Torovenado is the expression of struggle and unity. The carnival was created nearly sixty years ago, following a vow made by Señora Carmen Toribio to San Jerónimo. Every year, the festivities begin at the Toribio family home. Since 1961, the town of Masaya has also celebrated a Torovenado, which is now the largest of its kind.
