This celebration celebrates the indigenous resistance to slavery imposed by the Spanish. Being mythical, half bull, half deer, El Torovenado is an expression of struggle and unity. The bull represents the brute force of arrogant Spanish; The deer symbolizes the discerning and enterprising native who is the task of surviving. This kind of carnival was created almost sixty years ago, following a vow by the señora Carmen Toribio in San Jerónimo; He is also nicknamed "del Malinche", the crowd wielding branches of this tree. Every year, the festivities depart from the family house of the Toribio, which perpetuates tradition.
Since 1961, the town of Masaya has also known a popular Torovenado; It's the largest today, but it's more commercial.
