NOTRE-DAME ABBEY
Late abbey, one of the oldest in France, with a church housing a relic of Saint Opportune.
Rebuilt in 1958 on the banks of the Orne to accommodate the Benedictine nuns who had taken refuge in Sées after the bombings of 1944, the Abbey of Notre-Dame d’Argentan is well worth a visit. Here, the Argentan stitch is still made by a few lacemaking sisters. A precious heritage still made with the needle. They only make collector’s items, sometimes for liturgical use. In 1996, they presented Pope John Paul II with a pall for his golden jubilee as a priest. Their art is in harmony with the silence and contemplation of Benedictine life.
