DUKES' CASTLE AND DUNGEON
Remains of the Château des Ducs and its keep, home to the Palais de Justice. The building once welcomed Catherine de Médicis and Henri IV.
In the 12th century, Argentan became one of Normandy’s major fortresses. The château became a royal residence and Argentan a fortified town. Henry II Plantagenet, in particular, assembled his military forces here. Burnt down during the Hundred Years’ War, it was rehabilitated in 1372 by Pierre II de Valois, Count of Alençon. In 1517, it served as the royal residence for the visit of Francis I, accompanied by Leonardo da Vinci and his automaton lion.
