HOLY MARY MONASTERY (SAMOSTAN SV. MARIJA)

Monastery accessible by boat on a solitary islet, built in Romanesque style, renovated in Renaissance style with its church.
On a lonely islet, this beautiful monastery is only accessible by boat. The monastery and its church were originally built by Italian monks in the 12th century in a Romanesque style. Successive alterations meant that the Renaissance style came to dominate. The Benedictines played a leading role in the intellectual life of Mljet (and the Republic of Dubrovnik). The monastery complex was renovated in 1960 and handed over to the episcopate in 1997.
