BASTET TEMPLE
This temple, dedicated to the cult of the goddess Bastet, was the setting for great and joyous celebrations in her name.
Temple built by Pepi I, third king of the 6th dynasty (2460-2200), of which only scattered granite blocks can be seen on the site. The temple was dedicated to the worship of the goddess Bastet, who was venerated from the Old Kingdom to the Late Period. She appeared first as a lioness and then as a cat. A benevolent goddess, she protected men against diseases and evil spirits. Great and joyful feasts were held in her name in this temple, it seems that more wine than necessary was drunk there...
