Most visited cemetery in the United States with 3 memorials to Illinois war dead
Oak Ridge is the second most visited cemetery in the United States, after Arlington Cemetery near Washington, D.C. The cemetery is also home to three memorials to Illinois veterans of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.
The Tomb of Abraham Lincoln, a true monument designed by sculptor G. Mead Larkin, is probably the most visited site in the cemetery.
After Lincoln's death on April 15, 1865, his Illinois friends immediately requested permission to bury him in Springfield. The committee that organized his funeral also formed an association to build the tomb, which was dedicated in 1874. In 1895, the association deeded the grave and surrounding land to the State of Illinois.
Lincoln's body first arrived in the public cemetery vault on the hill behind and below the present grave. The coffin of his son William, who died in the White House at the age of 11, also lay there. Both had traveled nearly 1,700 miles in a special wagon via a circuitous route from Washington, DC before being buried on May 4, 1865.
A circular corridor leads to the marble burial chamber where the famous phrase attributed to Secretary of War Stanton reads, "Now he belongs to eternity." The former president is buried there alongside his wife Mary and three of his four children. A number of other prominent politicians and Illinois personalities are also buried here.

A l'intérieur, la visite vaut le coup. Des statues représentant Lincoln a des âges différents, illustrent le parcours.
A l'intérieur, son corps repose ainsi que celui de sa famille (sauf son fils aîné qui est enterré à Arlington à WDC).
