Visitor Center offering guided tours with an almost permanent showing of a film that traces the life of the president
The home of Abraham Lincoln and his wife Mary is located in a residential area of Springfield. The house was built in 1839 for Reverend Charles Dresser. In May 1844, the Lincolns purchased it for US$1,500. In 1846, upon the arrival of his first child, Abraham Lincoln added a bedroom and pantry in the back, and the kitchen was moved. As the years passed and four children were born, the Lincoln family remodeled the house. The final modifications took place in late 1859 and early 1860. The Lincolns continued to live here until they left for the White House in February 1861, never to return. The various rooms were furnished as they were then.
