UNION MINERS CEMETERY - MOTHER JONES MONUMENT
Cemetery where are buried the miners of the region, killed during the shooting of October 10, 1898, during a strike
The Miners Union Cemetery is linked to the Virden Riot, a miners' strike in which several miners were killed on October 10, 1898. The bodies were first buried in the town cemetery, but this led to disapproval from the town. In 1899, the local miners' union bought an acre of land here and moved the remains. This cemetery is also the resting place of Marie Harris "Mother" Jones, a strong advocate for the rights of miners and children
