LUCILLE'S SERVICE STATION
Service station dating from 1929, built with a floor reserved for the housing of the owners at Hydro
Built with a second floor for the owners' living quarters, this service station was constructed by Carl Ditmore in 1929. After being renamed Provine Station by its new owner, W. O. Waldrop, in 1934, Carl and Lucille Hamons took over the operation in 1941. While Carl worked at another job to improve the household income, Lucille ran the station and the adjacent motel business, while raising the couple's three children. Despite the loss of business due to the opening of I-40, and Carl's death in the early 1970's, Lucille continued to operate the resort until his death in 2000. During the 1990s, Lucille even earned the nickname Mother of The Mother Road. In 2013, the exterior of the gas station was restored, along with the motel portion, which was falling into disrepair. After ASAP Energy Inc. bought the place in 2017, the whole place was once again refurbished, but from top to bottom. Next to the station is a marker dedicated to the Will Rogers Highway (and Will Rogers). On the lower part of the stele, there are indications on the history of the station and a quote from Rogers. The latter can be translated as: "What constitutes a life well spent? The love and admiration of your fellow man is all that can be asked. Lucille is buried with her family in the Hydro Masonic Cemetery.
