Mather Point, the closest point to the main Visitor Center.
This is the closest point to the main Visitor Center (less than 450 m) and undoubtedly the best viewpoint for sunset or sunrise on the South Rim. 10 miles separate the two shores here. Mather Point is named after Stephen Mather (1867-1930). He was president and owner of the Thorkildsen-Mather Borax Company, which made his fortune. An ardent environmentalist, he was the first director of the National Park Service and a leading advocate for the creation of a national park at the Grand Canyon.
