DESERT VIEW WATCHTOWER
This observation tower offers a sublime view of the Grand Canyon, the Painted Desert and the San Francisco Peaks
A first stop not to be missed if you arrive from the east. Built in 1932 at the edge of the void on the model of the Amerindian kivas - rooms used for religious rites - this observation tower seems to come out of the Anasazi remains. Designed by the famous architect Mary Colter, it offers a sublime view of the Grand Canyon, the Painted Desert to the east and the San Francisco Peaks to the south. It is also the highest point on the South Rim. Inside, the walls are adorned with murals by Hopi artist Fred Kabotie.
