PANAGHIA EVANGELISTRIA CATHEDRAL
Cathedral welcoming pilgrims with an icon and a bell tower made of marble from Tinos and Paros.
This cathedral (Παναγία Ευαγγελίστρια της Τήνου) is considered the greatest architectural work built in Greece since its independence. Every year, it attracts thousands of pilgrims, and in Tinos, Catholics and Orthodox alike venerate it, not only on August 15. According to local legend, one night in 1822, a nun named Pelagia from the Kechrovouni convent dreamt that a miraculous icon was buried here. The locals began digging and discovered the remains of a Byzantine church with the icon attributed to Saint Luke. The cathedral, with its famous bell tower in Tinos and Paros marble, was built on the spot where the icon was discovered. The church and the icon were the object of popular veneration, similar to that of Lourdes. Pilgrims flock here in great numbers, performing penance by kneeling at the altar, and dedicating an impressive number of candles and ex-votos to the Virgin. The interior of the main cathedral is magnificent and truly striking, with its silver ex-votos. Don't miss the opportunity to go upstairs for an overview of the nave. Below the main cathedral is the church of Evressi (the Discovery), dedicated to Zoodochos Pighi (the Fountain of Life). Entering on the left, don't miss the remains of an early Christian church dedicated to Aghios Ioannis. Archaeological research has shown that the site was already home to a sanctuary of Dionysus in ancient times.
