THE WITCH HOUSE
House example of the typical New England architecture of the 17th century which was inhabited by Jonathan Corwin in Salem
The "witch's house" is a house built between 1642 and 1675. It was inhabited for almost forty years by Jonathan Corwin, one of the judges of the Salem witch trials. It is an excellent example of seventeenth-century New England architecture. In 1944, when the house fell into ruin, the people of Salem managed to raise the US$42,000 needed for its restoration. The museum, which has been open since 1948, gives an excellent insight into the lifestyle of the time and looks back on the tragic events of 1692.
