Colonial house of Georgian architecture, built in 1727 by the captain and merchant John Crowninshield.
Built in 1727 by Captain and merchant John Crowninshield, this colonial house is of Georgian architecture. It belonged to the Crowninshield family until 1832, and became, between 1791 and 1819, the residence of William Bentley, an important Salem reverend known for his writings and his impressive collection of books. In the 1940s, Salem's Hawthorne Hotel purchased the building, and then presented it to the town some 20 years later.
