The house where Nathaniel Hawthorne was born on July 4, 1804, an author well known in the United States for his short stories and novels
You may not know Nathaniel Hawthorne, but this native of Salem is a very well-known author in the United States for his short stories and novels. He was also a close friend of Herman Melville, the author of Moby Dick. Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in this house on July 4, 1804. It was the writer's grandfather who acquired the building in 1772. It was moved from its original site (on Union Street) in 1958 to be closer to the House of the Seven Gables, which inspired the author for his eponymous novel.
