PEIRCE-NICHOLS HOUSE
Federal style house, originally located near the water so that the owner could moor his ship
Built in 1784 by the renowned architect Samuel McIntre (1757-1811) for the navigator Jerathmiel Peirce and his family, this federally-styled house was originally located near the water so that the owner could moor his ship. Due to financial problems, Peirce was later forced to sell the house to a family of friends, who eventually left it to the Peirces' grandchildren. The Essex Museum acquired the house in 1917. The house, which is in need of restoration, is not open to the public.
