Museum with permanent exhibitions of collections from five continents in Salem
The museum was originally an initiative of the East India Marine Society, an association of sailors who, as early as 1799, collected objects brought back from their voyages. Since then, the small collection has grown into a museum with four departments: Asia, Africa, Oceania and India: Asia, Africa, Oceania and India. Permanent exhibitions feature collections from all five continents. Don't miss the temporary exhibitions, which focus on contemporary art, and the authentic Chinese house, Yin Yu Tang, at the center of the museum, which can be visited on guided tours.
