An important merchant marine port in the United States, the city of Salem
The city of Salem has long been an important U.S. Merchant Marine port. Along the docks, you can observe the architecture of merchant houses of yesteryear and admire the reconstruction of the Friendship of Salem, a sailing ship built in 1797. Also not to be missed are Custom House, the former customs office, and Narbonne House, built in 1675, which is a fine example of the houses inhabited by Salem's middle class in the 17th and 18th centuries.
