MASSASOIT STATUE
Monument across from Pilgrim Memorial State Park, erected in 1921, commemorating Massasoit's life in Plymouth
Just across from Pilgrim Memorial State Park and Plymouth Rock stands a statue representing Massasoit, chief of the Wanpanoag tribe at the time when Europeans arrived in the New World. Erected in 1921, this monument commemorates the life of Massasoit, known for his assistance to the English settlers and for forming an alliance with the Pilgrim Fathers. To thank him for his help, the pilgrims invited him and his men to a feast of turkeys, a meal that gave birth to the tradition of Thanksgiving.
