PORTLAND OBSERVATORY
Imposing observatory of 26 m high with a beautiful 360° view of Casco Bay on one side and Portland on the other
Built in 1807, this imposing observatory is a relic of the region's maritime past. During the War of 1812, it was used by the Americans as a watchtower to watch for the arrival of the English. It survived the great fire of 1866 thanks to the bravery of the workers who tirelessly poured litres of water along its walls. At 26 metres high, it overlooks the city and offers a beautiful 360-degree view of Casco Bay on one side and Portland on the other. But to enjoy it, you first have to climb its 103 steps!
