VICTORIA MANSION
Portland vacation home featuring different rooms in a burst of color and cheerfulness
This house was built from 1858 to 1860, on the orders of Ruggles Sylvester Morse. A native of Maine who made his fortune in the hotel industry in New Orleans, he decided to build a vacation home based on his travels. The result is surprising. Each room is different, borrowing from India, France, Italy, in a debauchery of colors and cheerfulness. At the time, Morse was accused by the very conservative Portland community of bringing with him the dissolute mores of New Orleans.
