RHODE ISLAND STATE HOUSE
Impressive neoclassical building with a marble dome and a 3 m high gilded bronze statue on top
This impressive building dominating the city is none other than the state capitol. Neoclassical in style, it was built between 1895 and 1904. Its marble dome is the fourth largest in the world. Perched atop it is a gilded bronze statue over three meters high, nicknamed The Independent Man. It represents a man and symbolizes the freedom and independence of spirit of Roger Williams, Rhode Island's founder. The building, which houses the offices of the Governor of Rhode Island, was renovated in the 1990s.
