PROVIDENCE ATHENAEUM
Old library in a Greek Revival style building with marble busts mixed with rare books
This is one of the oldest libraries in the country, founded in 1836 and housed in a Greek Revival style building. Stephen Hopkins, one of the signatories of the Declaration of Independence, was one of the first members of the library. The interior of the building, where marble busts mingle with rare books, is as striking as the exterior. The bronze bust of the writer H. P. Lovecraft and, above all, the life-size portrait of George Washington, by Gilbert Stuart, painted during Washington's lifetime, who died a year later.
