BROWN UNIVERSITY
Brown's nationally registered university with an extensive library and small museum ideal for a free tour.
From Greek Revival-style buildings to modern buildings, you can wander around the campus to discover Providence's university life. Brown University is one of the oldest colleges in New England and is an Ivy League college. It owes its name to a wealthy 18th-century merchant family who funded the establishment. Now a national heritage site, the university dates from 1793 and teaches dozens of disciplines.
Begin your visit at University Hall, the oldest building on campus, which dates back to 1770. Then continue with a stop at the John Carter Brown Library, an extensive library that opened in the early 20th century. The John Hay Library houses a collection of manuscripts by Emile Zola, Dante and Blake. The Anne S.K. Brown military collection, which traces the military history of the 19th and 20th centuries, is also worth a visit.
Also on campus, the Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology can be visited free of charge. It is a small museum with only one room, in which objects from the university's collections are on display, including information about the many expeditions of James Louis Gidding - an archaeologist and former professor of anthropology at Brown - to the Arctic regions. To learn even more about Brown, why not take a guided tour of the campus? They take place on weekdays during school time and are led by students.
