TOURO SYNAGOGUE
Colonial-era synagogue in Newport suggesting a very informative tour of early Jewish life
This synagogue was the very first to be erected in the United States in 1763. It is also the only colonial-era synagogue still standing today. Its name comes from Isaac Touro, the very first rabbi of the synagogue. The highly informative guided tour presents the architecture of the building and details the daily life of the first Sephardic Jews in New England. In particular, we learn that Newport's first Jewish residents settled here as early as the 1650s.
