HUNTER HOUSE
Colonial style house on the harbor side of Newport, worth a visit for its authenticity
Built in 1748 by a wealthy merchant, this house is located on the port side, a little apart from the other billionaires' houses. It is the oldest of them all, and the most modest too. Less flamboyant than its companions, it is of colonial style but is worth the detour for its authenticity. It has been restored to the appearance it had under its second owner, Colonel Joseph Wanton Jr. (1730-1780). Remaining loyal to the British crown during the American Revolution, he had to flee the city and abandon his house.
