MARBLE HOUSE
Magnificent marble house contributes to making Newport the coastal city of billionaires
If it's nice to spend holidays with the family, there's no question of cramming into the same house! The Marble House was built to be the summer residence of Mr. William K. Vanderbilt, younger brother of Cornelius II, who had The Breakers built for his family not far away. This magnificent house, built in 1882 and 1892, contributed greatly to making Newport the coastal city of billionaires. The construction of the building is estimated to have cost some $11 million, $7 million of which was for the transport of the marble alone.
