BASÍLICA SANTA MARÍA
Basilica classified as an Asset of Cultural Interest, with a small museum of sacred art
This basilica was originally built in the 14th century under the orders of María Díaz de Haro, founder of the town of Portugalete in 1322. The original building, which had become too narrow, was replaced in the 15th century by the Gothic-Renaissance style basilica that can be admired today. The Baroque tower was added in the first half of the 18th century. The basilica, classified as a Site of Cultural Interest, also has a small museum of sacred art. On leaving the temple, a viewpoint offers beautiful views of the Ría.
