MUSEU SERRALVES (SERRALVES MUSEUM)
In this magnificent residence designed by the famous architect Siza Vieira are exhibited great names of contemporary art.
In a magnificent house designed by the famous contemporary architect Siza Vieira, the works are hung with great skill and thoughtfulness, taking into consideration the clarity, information and space of the place. The museum offers modular and adaptable spaces for the different exhibitions with an ingenious play of light. Everything is studied in detail, from the designs of the toilets to the staircase railings.
Outside, the Parque de Serralves (18 ha) extends the pleasure of the eye: designed by Jacques Gréber in 1932, it begins with a formal garden before descending into a succession of square pools surrounded by pruned boxwood. One then arrives at a small panorama overlooking a miniature lake with an island, where the vegetation is carefully left to itself in its controlled disorder. On the way, a visit to the "Casa de Serralves" which dominates the park is a must. Its art deco architecture from the 1930s, designed by French architect Charles Siclis, places it in the network of the most remarkable houses in the world. The foundation also organizes concerts and video art projections.
At the end of May, beginning of June, "Serralves em festa" is organized, 50 hours of free and non-stop programming of music, theater and dance in the gardens and the museum. There is also a bookstore in this space with a very interesting collection of documents in the arts. A cafeteria on the first floor offers a large buffet every lunchtime. A place not to be missed!
