You don't have to leave the city to take a dip. Just hop on the 500 bus at Praça de Ribeira. It goes along the coast to Matosinhos, about ten kilometers north of downtown. And there, the beaches follow the creeks. Go down when you like one of them. The view of the port may discourage some, but rest assured, the water quality is very good, which was not the case a few years ago. A little further on, Espinho (20 km south of Porto) is a large seaside resort, with all that goes with it.
