SAINT CHRISTINE'S HOSPICE RUINS
Ruins of an old hospice, built to provide comfort to pilgrims, care to the sick and salvation to the dead.
Located near the pass, on the sunniest Aragonese slope, this hospice was built to ensure comfort to pilgrims, treatments to patients, salvation to the dead and assistance to the living. In the late 11th century, under the reign of Sanche Ramírez, king of Aragon, the foundation received many financial, territorial or human contributions. Until the 14th century, it was a reference for each pilgrim, but the decline eventually arrived with its numerous fires, pillaging, and wars until the 18th century which had it transferred to Jaca, in the current Saint-Jacques church. For a long time, this place was considered as one of the "Three hospitals of the world" by the Codex Calixtinus (of the 12th century) with the hospice of Jerusalem and that of Mont-Joux (Grand Saint-Bernard). It is one of the major sites of Via Tolosana (route of Arles of the roads of Santiago de Compostela).
