SOMPORT TUNNEL

The Somport international tunnel is a fine technical achievement, serving as a road link between France and Spain.
Inaugurated on 17 January 2003, after a Franco-Spanish agreement signed in 1991, this road tunnel links the two countries via the western part of the Pyrenees chain by crossing the Somport pass... in its heart. Before it, only the RN 134 provided the passage but its altitude of 1635 m was not without difficulties, especially in winter, when traffic conditions do not always allow this route. Passing through the bowels of the rock, at an altitude of 1150 m, solves the difficulties associated with ice and snow. In the Aspe Valley, you will find the entrance to this long 8602 m long gut, of which 2,848 are in France and 5,754 in Spain. Its route runs along the Pau-Canfranc railway tunnel, which is no longer in operation. The structure is permanently monitored by rescue teams from both countries. Every 400 metres, the building is equipped with secure shelters with a gallery that can be accessed in the event of an incident. It is 9 metres wide, with two 3.50 m lanes, ventilation units and permanent lighting on both sides.
