CHÂTEAU DE MARKSBURG
Untouched since the Middle Ages, Marksburg Castle dominates the Rhine valley on its right bank, in the part between Bingen and Koblenz that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are around forty castles in this Rhine region, most of which have been restored and are in varying degrees of condition. This is not the case with Marksburg, which was never destroyed.
It is a magnificent example of military architecture, preserved for seven centuries, built atop a rocky peak. It was used as a prison in the 19th century.
