BEFREIUNGSHALLE KEHLHEIM
A famous monument that commemorates the wars of liberation, when the Germans rose up against the Napoleonic yoke.
This monumental ochre rotunda overlooking the Danube is a memorial commissioned by Ludwig I of Bavaria. The architect Friedrich Gärtner was in charge of the project. Completed in 1863 by Leo von Klenze according to modified plans, it celebrates the Befreiungskriege, the wars of liberation against Napoleon in 1813-1815. 18 monumental statues symbolizing as many Germanic tribes crown the buttresses of the rotunda. The interior is no less impressive, lining up 34 white marble statues holding 17 bronze shields under a 58-metre high dome.
