PUERTO PAÑUELO
Small port on the shores of Lake Nahuel Huapi, offering great opportunities for walking or boating
Situated on the banks of Lake Nahuel Huapi, 25 kilometres from Bariloche, this small port, which was once an islet, dates from 1965 and offers beautiful prospects for walks or boat trips. You should know that most cruises on the lake leave from here. They travel to Puerto Blest, Arrayanes Forest, Quetrihue Peninsula, Frias Lake, Victoria Island and Myrtle Woods. Its name has a historical and poetic meaning: pañuelo meaning "handkerchief", which refers to the time when people who stayed at the quayside shook their handkerchiefs as a farewell to the travellers on the boats. Finally, another interesting anecdote from 1939: when the Hotel Llao Llao, built entirely of wood, was completed, it caught fire some time later and was completely destroyed. The wood debris was then used to connect the islet to the mainland. The hotel was rebuilt only a year later, this time using stone and reinforced concrete, and can still be admired today: a marvel, certainly one of the most beautiful hotels in the country! Also don't miss a visit to the San Eduardo Chapel, built in 1938 by Alejandro Bustillo (who was responsible for the Bariloche Cathedral and many other buildings throughout Argentina) and made of wood. Inside, you can admire stained glass windows and paintings by Argentinian artists such as Vicente Forte and Vazquez Málaga. Please note, however, that it is open to the public on Sundays only.
